Understanding hCG Levels During Early Pregnancy
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is often referred to as the "pregnancy hormone" because it is produced by cells formed in the placenta, which nourish the egg after it has been fertilized and becomes attached to the uterine wall. Levels can first be detected by a blood test about 11 days after conception and about 12-14 days after conception by a urine test.
How to Use This hCG Calculator
To use the calculator, input your laboratory-confirmed beta-hCG value (mIU/mL) and select your current week of pregnancy based on your Last Menstrual Period (LMP). The tool compares your number against the standard 5th to 95th percentile ranges used in clinical settings. A "Normal" result means your level falls within the wide statistical bracket for that specific week.
The Science of hCG Doubling Time
In about 85% of normal pregnancies, the hCG level will double every 48 to 72 hours. As you get further along in pregnancy and the hCG level gets higher, the time it takes to double can increase to about every 96 hours. Caution must be used in making too much of hCG numbers. A normal pregnancy may have low hCG levels and result in a perfectly healthy baby. The results from an ultrasound after 5-6 weeks gestation are much more accurate than using hCG numbers.
What Do High or Low Numbers Mean?
A low hCG level can mean several things and should be retested within 48-72 hours to see how the level is changing. It could indicate a miscalculation of pregnancy dating, a possible miscarriage or blighted ovum, or an ectopic pregnancy. Conversely, a high hCG level can also mean several things and should be retested. It may indicate a miscalculation of pregnancy dating, a molar pregnancy, or a multiple pregnancy (twins or more).

Summary of Pregnancy Milestones
During the first trimester, the body undergoes rapid changes. By week 6, the heart begins to beat. By week 9, the embryo becomes a fetus. Throughout this journey, hCG acts as the primary chemical signal to the body to maintain the uterine lining. However, remember that once levels exceed 6,000 mIU/mL or after 6-7 weeks of pregnancy, ultrasound provides a much clearer picture of fetal health than blood work alone.
